The first time I heard of watercress was in books I read as a kid where E. B. White's swans ate it (I think) and fancy folks ate it in sandwiches. At the time I thought it would be yucky -- why would anyone make a sandwich out of weeds a bird would eat? As far as I know, I've never tasted what I thought would look like a weed in MI waters.
Years and years and a decade or two later, I looked for it for a salad recipe and scored the bunch above. It doesn't look nearly as gross as I'd imagined.
Watercress is available at Grower's Direct for $1.49 a bunch.
