We wound up picking up a Kenmore top-freezer manufactured in November '08 for $300 from a guy a mile or two away. It has a few exterior cosmetic issues, doesn't have intricate shelf-placement capability (there are a limited number of predetermined slots to choose from), and has a built-in ice-maker which we won't use as there is no in-line filter (that I'm aware of). No filter means the cubes would be brown-ish and all the chunks of funk in the water would probably seize up the maker shortly. Currently we use a Brita and change the filter as soon as the indicator says there's 2 of 4 months of filter use left. Our water is na-a-asty.
Our giant fridge does have door buckets that can be moved around to accomodate buckets-full of short items or tall items. And spill-proof, slide-out shelving. And is 3 cubic feet bigger than our old one. And has clear deli and crisper drawers, as opposed to amber ones like those in our old fridge, which allows us to see immediately what is available. Maybe, just maybe, less stuff will go bad.

This bad-ass is about 6" taller than our old one so it still fits our space nicely even with 3 more cubic feet of space. And you can't even see (most of) the blemishes from this far away!
Look at those neato door buckets which hold all of our condiments. And those drawers! You can even see the moisture in the bag of iceburg. I nearly forgot, this thing can accomodate my worm food bin without taking an entire shelf...NICE.
There's the ice-maker hogging up a bunch of space. We might remove it later if I find it too annoying. As it is, the ice-cube trays require two columns of space rather than one. I do like that the freezer has the wire shelf in the middle as opposed to the ones with the shelf way up toward the top or those without a shelf at all.
Right now SoCal Edison is running a "special" where they'll pick up your old functional fridge and pay you $50 for it. How cool is that?
