Knudsen Reduced Fat Cultured Buttermilk

I don't buy buttermilk often because I tend to waste the majority. A 1-quart container is the smallest I've ever been able to find.

Here's the Nutrition Facts and ingredient statement, if you're interested. Click on the images if you want to be able to see them.

What to do with buttermilk? Well, I'm gonna make some catfish, but other than that you could do like a former live-in of mine and pour a glass, salt it and drink it straight, sort of like a freakshow Rocky Balboa, or you could do:

Buttermilk is available in the milk cooler section of your Ralph's for $2.69 a quart.

I have been buying Knudsen buttermilk for many years because of the quality and that it has little specks of what looks like butter in it. I have purchased my last quart because I poured out all but about three ounces that went in to my glass. The reason I discarded it is because the milk came out in slimy clots that were disgusting. Also there were no yellow specks present. I thought the first quart was somehow poorly refrigerated at some time, but the second quart purchased 2 weeks later was the same! The first was purchased at Ralph's and the second and last at Von's.

Slimy clots? Gross! It's been awhile since I've used buttermilk, but I do remember that the Knudsen brand looks like thick milk with butter in it. I'm sorry to hear you wound up with a couple of bad quarts.

I'm not a representative of the Knudsen brand or Kraft, it's parent company, and can't do anything to help you out. Have you talked to Von's about your latest purchase? You might be able to exchange it for their Lucerne brand or at least get a refund!

I've bought Knudsen buttermilk for many more years than I care to admit. Recently I've had the same experience Ms. VonHendy had...very thick or in clots. We bought it at Vons in La Crescenta, and at first thought it was improperly transported on improperly stored at the store. But since then we've had the same experience at 2 Vons and 1 Ralphs. I hope Knudsen hasn't fiddled with a good thing.

Thanks for weighing in, Chuck. I agree with you and hope Knudsen hasn't goofed up what seems to have been a good product. Have you switched brands? Any recommendations?

I would love it if they would add the pint size carton. size I only have use for a pint at a time and end up wasting the rest. I know it can be done because of the heavy cream cartons sizing.

Hi Viola! I know exactly what you mean! I used to waste all kinds of buttermilk for the same reason. Since I started "making" buttermilk I've been able to minimize how much I have in the refrigerator and I've learned that it actually lasts quite some time in a mason/canning jar. Give it a spin!

Hi my name is Tyler, I have recently used Knudsen's buttermilk and have no problems, although i did use it for gluten free cupcakes, is buttermilk gluten free?

Tyler, I'd expect all buttermilks to be gluten-free since it's just made from milk but if you have a gluten allergy definitely read the ingredient statements to be certain.
