Remember That One Basil Plant?

At one time, it was really beautiful. Why can't I get a basil plant to stay alive?

The secret to keeping your basil alive is proper watering, and lots of sunlight. More info can be found at my blog http://TheBasilMan.com :o)

Thanks for the feedback, Kenny. I'd appreciate if you'd expound on what "proper" watering and "lots" of sunlight mean.

I walked around on your blog and look forward to more info!

I've found that it's hard to over-water basil. I keep a saucer underneath, and when I water from the top, I do so slowly, allowing the dirt to saturate. Once it's starting the come out the bottom, it's good. Another way to accomplish this is to fill the saucer, let it absorb up into the dirt, and continue filling the saucer until it won't absorb any more. I use Miracle Gro moisture control potting mix - I really recommend it. It helps hold the moisture in like a sponge. :o) As far as sunlight goes, the more the better. Basil loves direct sun. If leaves are turning yellow, or pale green, it's a sign that the plant isn't getting enough sun. This can also be caused by larger leaves blocking the smaller ones beneath, so be sure to harvest the big ones. Hope this helps. :o)

Ah, I'm confident my problem was lack of direct sunlight. I'll get a plant in the spring and see if leaving it outside works. Thanks for the info!!
